Maybe in other parts of the nation they're cool with understanding cocktails at the ingredient level, but this is Brooklyn, babyaround here, we get to know our food and drink from the ground up. It's in this spirit of foodie exploration that Genspace has hooked us up with a way to get inside (literally) some awesome alcoholic concoctions. Sign up for this class, and you'll learn to extract the actual DNA of a few signature drinks. How Brooklyn is that?Genspace was started by a team of science enthusiasts with diverse professional backgrounds, including artists, engineers, writers, and biologists. Together, they created a community biotech lab where science is fun and accessible, and they are able to celebrate the joy and wonder of science in everyday life. Since joy and wonder is why we turn to cocktails in the first place, this class is a double dose of awe and awesome. You'll get a tour of the lab with Dr. Ellen D. Jorgensen (co-founder and lead cocktailian) and then get down to the drinks. Dr. Oliver Medvedik will lead class in mixing tasty signature recipes (such as the DNAqueri) where DNA becomes visible right in the glass. While learning about the process and the nitty-gritty of what you're seeing, you'll get to guzzle the suspended DNA itself. We're even throwing in some pies from Fornino Park Slope to help soak up all the, um ... science.
